September 27, 2008 Field Trip: Jelks Preserve, Venice

The weather was delightful for our recent walk at Jelks, September 27th. Denny and Al couldn’t attend so they called on “Private Lyons” to lead the native plant lovers in attendance: Bart & Luann Rhoten, Dave Smith, Linda Wilson, Rich & Sue Freeman, Belle Voit, and Jack & Nancy Lyons.

Linda Wilson listed over 60 plants with the able help of Dave Smith who just returned from his condo in the North Carolina mountains. The Iron Weed, Vernonia blodgettii is in full bloom along a large section of the trail, right before the first cut-off to the Myakka River. If you have time, this is a must see! At the end of the trail to the Myakka, we all saw Spanish Needle, Bidens bipinnata, for the first time. This is the version that has yellow ray and disk florets. It is listed as found in Central and North Florida. You never know what you’re going to see on a given walk.

For those of you wondering about Nancy’s Little Purple, Verbena litoralis Kunth var. brevibracteata, it is listed in The Guide to Florida Wild Flowers by Walter Kingsley Taylor as Verbena brasiliensis.
