October 31, 2009 Field Trip: Caloosahatchee Regional Park

Seventeen members and friends joined for the October field trip to the Caloosahatchee Regional Park at Alva (near Fort Myers). We walked a loop trail that started through a mixed forest, then wandered along the banks of the Caloosahatchee River and ended with another short walk through the forest.

In the forest we identified several trees and shrubs including Marlberry, Ardisia escallonioides; Water Hickory, Carya aquatica; Mulberry, Morus sp.; and Hackberry, Celtis sp.; which are seldom seen in our area. Of course there were other trees that we could not identify. It is amazing what a different variety of flora exists such a short distance away.

Along the river we saw many common plants and a few new ones. Among these were Giant Reed, Arundo donax; Strap Fern, Campyloneurum phyllitidis; Hog Plum, Ximenia americana; Carolina Aster, Symphyotrichum carolinianum; Persimmon, Diospyros virginiana and, of course, my old friend the ever-present Poison Ivy, Toxicodendron radicans.

The day was clear and the temperature was comfortably warm. It was perfect for walking and we all enjoyed the meandering trip along the river.

Why don't you stay-at-homes join us next time? Try it, you'll like it!
