In January, the Mangrove Chapter presented the Lazy Daze Pepper Busters, a volunteer group in the Tangerine Woods subdivision, with a Certificate of Public Support for their efforts in preserving, conserving and restoring the Real Florida.
For over six years, this group has worked to remove the invasive Brazilian Pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius) from the subdivision. The Mangrove Chapter has provided guidance to the group, teaching them about natives that they should preserve while working to eradicate the non-natives. The group is planning to plant natives to replace the Brazilian Peppers.
The Mangrove Chapter hopes that this award and the publicity that has come with it will inspire other subdivisions and communities to begin similar programs.
