On this nice warm day (not too hot) seven guests joined eight of our members on a walk at Deer Prairie Creek. We entered at the gate off of Rt.41 and drove into the parking lot at the kayak launching area on Deer Creek.
We walked a way along the internal trail but found little of interest. However, there was much to see near the parking lot at the river. There we identified the Category 1 invasive Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and the non-native Sow thistle (Sonchus sp.); and also natives such as Hempweed Vine (Mikania scandens), Asiatic Pennywort (Centella asiatica), Pigweed (Amaranthus sp.), and many other wetland types.
We drove back toward 41 and stopped near the gate to walk along the roadsides. These areas are always ripe with many varieties of wildflowers, native and exotic. Some of the plants we saw here are Nutall's Thistle (Cirsium nuttallii), Calusa Grape (Vitis shuttleworthii), Bluehearts (Buchnera americana), Mermaid Weed (Proserpinaca sp.), and the non-native Phasey Bean (Macroptillium lathyroides).
Overall we identified over 80 plants during our hour and a half walk.
