Saturday, February 14, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.  Stop by and say hello to the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, at the Lemon Bay Historical Society’s 22nd annual Cracker Fair. (Pioneer Plaza, 325 W. Dearborn Street, Englewood).  Learn about the native Florida plants that were important to Florida’s early settlers, including coontie, beautyberry, palmettos, and more.  We will have native plants for sale and educational literature to share.  The event is free and all are welcome.  For more information, contact mangrovechapter@fnps.org.

Chapter Meeting

Tuesday, February 10, 1:00 PM.  The Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society invites you to join us for our monthly program at Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center, 570 Bay Park Blvd., Englewood. Kate Rose, Charlotte County Sea Grant Agent will elaborate on the “Eyes on Seagrass” initiative studying the effect of water conditions on seagrass beds.Come early for social time and bring your packed lunch (12:15pm). Mangrove Chapter Walk - Friday, February 6, 9:00 - 11:00 AM - Deer Prairie Creek Preserve South, 10201 Tamiami Trail, North Port

Friday, February 6, 9:00-11:00 AM.  Join the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and UF/IFAS Sarasota Extension Service member Dr. Mary Davis for a walk at the Deer Prairie Creek Preserve South, 10201Tamiami Trail, North Port.  We will walk through a mosaic of plant communities typical of the SW Florida Pine Flatwoods Ecoregion and look for early spring blooms. Wednesday, January 14, 9:00-11:00 AM.   Do you wish you could recognize more of the native plants seen in our area? Join the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and members Dr. Bob Horswill and Barb Seibel on the first of a 3-walk series focused on native plant identification. This month, we will meet at the Ann and Chuck Dever Regional Park, 6961 San Casa Drive, Englewood.

Thursday, January 29, 9:00-11:00 AM. Join the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native plant Society and Armando Ubeda, Sarasota County Florida Sea Grant Extension Agent III, for a walk at Lemon Bay Park, 570 Bay Park Blvd., Englewood.  Armando will share how to identify the various mangroves (our chapter’s mascot) found growing at the park. Learn more about our amazing and unique Florida ecosystems as we explore the transition from coastal mangroves to upland scrub. Friday, January 9, 9:00-11:00 AM.  Join the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and member Dr. Mary Davis for a walk at the Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve, 1800 Mabry Carlton Pkway, Venice.  Mary will tell us about managing local ecosystems that help protect the Myakka River and our local source of water supply.  Meet at the first parking lot on the right. Monday, December 15, 9:00-11:00 AM.  Join the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and UF/IFAS Sarasota Extension Service member, Dr. Mary Davis, for a guided nature walk at Shamrock Park and Nature Center, 3900 Shamrock Drive, Venice.  Join us to learn more about life in the harsh environment of Florida Scrub.  We may see Florida Scrub Jays and Gopher Tortoise.  Meet at the Nature Center. Tuesday, December 9, 1:00 PM.  The Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society invites you to join us for our monthly program at Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center, 570 Bay Park Blvd., Englewood. Jen Rudolph, Sarasota County Neighborhood Environmental Stewardship Coordinator, will discuss the Rain Check Program. The initiative is a rebate incentive program “designed to encourage homeowners to install specialized small-scale Best Management Practice (BMPs) that improve water quality and increase stormwater infiltration which protect our valuable water resources.” Come early for social time-bring your packed lunch (12:15pm).
